Medical Cards are usually given to those who are in low-income households. If you qualify for a medical card, normally your child/children are also entitled to the same range of services which includes free aural (ear) services.
However, it is possible to obtain a medical card for your child only even if you do not qualify for one if they have a particular medical expense e.g. hearing aids/hearing tests.
For children over the age of 16, they may qualify for a medical card in their own right either as a full-time student or in addition with the Disability Allowance Payment.
How Do I Apply?
The best and quickest way to apply is via online through http://www.hse.ie/eng/services/list/1/schemes/mc/. Alternatively you can download a form here. If applying on behalf of a child, attach any relevant reports/assessments from audiologists, ENT specialists, or your GP in addition to the application.
